What happens if I didn't know what type of oil I needed in my car and I just put 10-30 in?

You did'nt do anything to hurt your car by putting in 10W-30 motor oil in it.,That's the most common motor oil that's out there.You need to take a look on top of your engine and make sure you did'nt knock some cable aloose,that's what i think you most likely did.I can tell you right now thats it is'nt the motor oil that you used,What happens if I didn't know what type of oil I needed in my car and I just put 10-30 in?

Just kidding - usually more important than what kind of oil you use is that you are changing it (and the filter) regularly. You can usually ask at an auto parts store and they can look it up, otherwise check with the dealership, or look online (or snag a chilton or haynes manual, and see what they recommend).





Unfortunately, if you didn't know what kind of oil to use, you probably also didn't know how much to add - hopefully you checked the level carefully - if it was too low then you should've gotten a 'check oil' light - although if you added too much, then it can cause the crankcase pressure to be too high and can permanently damage your motor.





Otherwise, if you weren't careful when you were changing it, you might've accidentally bumped into something, knocking some wiring loose maybe.





Start by checking for 'untied shoestrings' (obvious stuff), but it doesn't sound like the type of oil was the problem, and of course, with it being an elaborate machine, it might be completely unrelated to anything you did.

Worst case, just ask around friends/family to see if anyone recommends a good mechanic.
every res10w-30 does the same thing no matter what type of brand it is. If you want to put 5-30 it will affect it a little bit because the difference between them is that the 10-30 is thicker then the 5-30. if you ask a clerk at a part shop like checker or auto zone they would say that you should use the 10-30 for the warmer seasons and the 5-30 for the colder season... I don't know why because someone i know who has been doing auto mechanics and knows about these things says that they type you use depends on the altiude because of the pressure the engine uses to make the fluid go to the parts that revolve or move. i recommed that you ask a person at a part store or you keep on using the same oil your using because they will depending on the altitude (sea level) your engine might be getting a oil that is too weak (the weak one is the 5-30)
the oil shouldn't cause the check engine light to come on ,have auto zone scan the computer and maybe they can tell you what the code stands for on it,adding oil to one wont make the cel light come on unless its still low on oil,if you ran it extremely low on oil adding oil to it may not help it,it may have did damage to the engine before you added the oil back to it,good luck.
10-30 oil is good in any car or truck,,its the one most recommended.


Acceleration problem requires a mechanics help.
It ain't the oil.....10w-30 is fine for just about any car.
