My car is leaking oil, what type of gasket would it be? ?

For a while now, my 1987 Pontiac 6000(148,000 miles) has been slowly leaking oil. While it's parked it leaks and leaves tiny puddles. I researched the issue and found that it could be one of many types of gaskets: valve cover, head, and oil pan. How could I know which one it is without having to have it put on a lift and looked at for top dollar? My car is leaking oil, what type of gasket would it be? ?
You need to determine if the leak is with the engine running or off. A running engine can leak oil from a multitude of places -- seals, gaskets, sensors, fittings, oil filter, etc. If it leaks just sitting there then it can ONLY be the oil pan or the drain plug. You'll need to degrease the engine, let it dry completely then slide a large piece of cardboard underneath overnight. If you don't get any oil stains then it's just a matter of pin pointing the culprit. My car is leaking oil, what type of gasket would it be? ?
If yours is a V6, a really sneaky leak may occur on the driver's side. This engine uses a distributorless ignition system, but there's still a dummy distributor shaft in the lower intake manifold to turn the oil pump. The O-ring seal on the shaft housing can leak, allowing oil to seemingly come from nowhere on that side.
wake2wake is right. clean it at a spray off car wash. to me it sounds like a main seal leak or it could be the oil pan. after you clean it, pay close attention where the puddles are forming. that will help you narrow it down.
if it,s leaking from the top and running down then i would say it,s the valve pan gasket. you could steam clean the engine and see where it,s leaking at.
There are dyes that can be put in oil that show up under black light. That's how those high dollar guys find it. First answer is the winner if you are doing it yourself.
I know that some mechanics use dyes to detrermine water?oil leaks u can ask at a parts store.
You need to get it as clean as possible and watch to see where the oil comes from.
park it, see where the spots are then trace it to it origin...
