Forgot to put oil cap on, drove car for about 3miles, car shut off and now i won't start, what could it be?

When i poped the hood there was oil everywhere cleaned it up a lil. . . Car acts like it wants to start but it just dont. . .Forgot to put oil cap on, drove car for about 3miles, car shut off and now i won't start, what could it be?

Sounds like you either seized it up from lack of oil in the engine or it's vapor locked from sucking oil in through the intake. Best bet is to pull ALL of the spark plugs and see if they're oil covered if so it may be savable. Top off your oil and see if it will crank over if it does it will push any oil left in the cylinders out .Then just replace the plugs and see if it will start. If the motor won't turn over at any point though you need to get it looked at by a mechanic cause there's probably engine damage.
If you washed the eng. its likely the ign. system is to wet to crank oil deposited on eng. will not cause a no start condition
If its a newer car it may have a Level Sensor Makes sure it is full of oil.........After making sure its full of oil you may need to push the petal too the floor while cranking on it after it starts let off you may have sucked some oil into the intake system....Good Luck.
When you cleaned it up,,did you use water on the engine? what type of vehicle is it?
you ran it out of oil and blew the motor 2000 dolars
1 check the perisher in the eng. and did you put oil in right away and it didn't start right.2 your oil pump mite have gone bad.3 is there a spark from the spark plug.what kind of car is it.
did you put the oil cap back on ? some cars don';t like that.also check your oil level.
