About wrong oil in a car?

I put in the wrong oil in my car. It was suppose to take 5w-40 but I put in 15w-40. It is smoking alot. I was just wondering if it will hurt the engine...I am getting it drained first thing in the morning...but will it hurt the engine since I had to drive it tonight?? Please help meAbout wrong oil in a car?
Every one else has already said it: the 15w40 is not the cause of your engine smoking unless you poured it ON the engine instead of IN the engine OR you grossly overfilled the cranckase.

The thicker oil will not damage your engine, it will only make it harder to start. Unless hard starting becomes a real problem, I wouldn't bother changing the oil until the car was due for a regular oil change.

Are you 100% sure that the smoke you are seeing isn't simply condensation from the weather getting colder ?About wrong oil in a car?
It's not the cause of your smoke. Did you check it wasn't overfilled?

The heavier grade oil might slow down the speed it cranks over when cold starting.

Did you actually check the exhaust smell? If it's oil smoke, it will smell like oil. As you ';lot'; have winter now, it could be just water vapour.
thats ok , not to worry bout it , no big deal ,dont sweat the small stuff , ,sound like the engine has lots of miles if so , add a can of STP , maby it ll smoke less
Its should be fine no big deal. Jumping from 5 thickness to 15 thickness for just that little of a time isnt gonna hurt any.
It wont hurt the car. The difference in most oils is viscosity, thickness, mostly. If you are concerned try draining all the oil out and replace the oil filter .. then fill up with new oil. Most auto-parts stores can tell you what kind of oil you need and how much.
That should not be making your car smoke. They may have spilled some oil on an exhaust manifold or somewhere.

The 15w is for the weight of the oil during colder weather. It is a bit thicker. The letter W, designates the ';winter'; or cold-start viscosity, at lower temperature.

This will not be the cause of your car smoking.
it will not hurt it...its a little thicker thats all...its dumb to waste the oil change,,just go back to 5 w after 3000 miles. it can NOT cause it to smoke unless you poured it on the engine instead of in it
I don't think that it would make your car smoke. It's just a thicker oil. Are you sure your car wasn't smoking BEFORE you changed the oil?
