HELP! my car is low on oil... what kind do i add?

I do not know much about cars but does it mater what kind of motor oil you add to a car? I have a 99 Mitsubishi Galant and it needs oil. i have a 20W-5 bottle on hand and i am wondering if its okay to add it...

...and if i do add- will anything happen to my car?HELP! my car is low on oil... what kind do i add?
You can add a 5W-20 or even a 20W-50 in a pinch if that's all you have. I would not add more than a quart, though. If you need more than one quart, stop by an auto parts store or Walmart and pick up the correct grade.

You can use a 5W-30 or 10W-30 in your car without problems. Pick an oil from one of the big brand names (you know them, I like Pennzoil) and you will be fine. All the name brand motor oils are very good products; you really cannot make a bad choice here.

Keep checking your oil regularly and top it off if needed. Keep a quart and some paper towels in the trunk, you will need them.HELP! my car is low on oil... what kind do i add?
What kind of oil does it have in it right now.? That is the question:

.

If it has synthetic oil in it now a lot of synthetic oil will not mix with regular oil.

.

You need to make sure about that or get some blended oil that will mix with either synthetic oil and regular oil.

.

Call where you have been getting your oil changed and ask them what type they have been using. Then ask them if it is ok to use the oil you have on hand.
It will say for certain in the manual, which you can probably download online, and it usually has the type printed directly on the car somewhere.

But for the most part oil is oil. The numbers are much more important in the winter than in the summer. If the vehicle is low on oil you're better off pouring in what you have than driving without.
Sure that's not a 5W20? That's OK to add....
