It takes 3 things to run an engine. Gas, spark and compression. You confirmed gas and spark, next test the engine for good and equal compression. The timing chain may be bad and need replacing. The thing you said about the lite coming on and the engine died, did you scan the computer for any codes? Ask your friend if he has a ecm scanner to read the engine codes. This will get you a starting point for any problems with the computer sensors as well. Have you removed any of the spark plugs to see if they are worn or damaged or gas fouled? Try doing a few of these tests and you are welcome to e-mail me if you need to.

Your little car is computer controlled. ANY malfunction with the circuitry, sensors, or output devices could cause the failure you describe.

鈥nd scroll down below the chart that appears. Read the discussion of the procedure to retrieve the Diagnostic Trouble Codes. It is simple, non-intrusive and safe. It only requires a paperclip.

With the codes in hand you can begin to understand the failure, and can refer to a QUALITY repair or shop manual for the proper diagnostics and the subsequent repairs.

I think those lights come on when the engine dies. It sounds like a cam position sensor. My 89 Grand Prix 3.1 did the same thing. You may also want to check the ignition module as you it could spark but not in the correct order or only a few cylinders.
what is the oil level at? With the car sitting flat and leave the starter alone for 10 minutes before you check. Bring it up to the top line. I am betting you is way low. Safety feature so you don't blow the engine due to the lack of oil.
