Disconnect your battery for a minute or so and then reconnect it. If your ';CHECK ENGINE'; light comes back on, you may have a problem, otherwise it was probably just a glich or computer hiccup that caused it to come on. If it doesn't come back on, forget about it.

There's nothing wrong with the oil if the check engine light is on. That's the good news. The other is that you should take this car to a competent mechanic to diagnose this as your computer has stored a trouble code. There are about two hundred things that it could be (or more). You deserve a medal for taking the time to ask about this as most would drive with it on.
the most minor thing is a short, I had a shorted fuse that would cause the check engine light to come on everytime it rained, but it could be as severe as a head gasket - I wouldnt take the chance get it checked out. When your car is out of oil your check oil light would come on, the oil has nothing to do with it.

Go to Auto Zone or Advance Auto and they will check the code for free. Then you will know what the problem is.
It could be allot of different things! Catalytic converter, a hose if off, the fuel pump, the fuel injectors, anything that has to do with the car could be wrong! You'll need to get it checked out ASAP because letting it go could result in other problems!!

Um, three questions.





1) Who changed your oil? When you get your oil changed, then they need to reset the light.





2) Have you had your oil changed? The light is usually a warning that it is time to change the oil. Generally it is set to go off in intervals exceeding 5000 miles since the last reset of the sensor.





3) What do you mean its full of oil? You hopefully don't mean that you filled the crankcase with oil, do you? You only need it up to full on the dipstick, not any further. I knew someone who overfilled their crankcase, and all the back pressure caused the engine to split open at the mounting bolts.

There could be several answers. If you have a fairly new vehicle it could be something as simple as the gas cap did not get tightend up all the way when you last got gas. Another reason could be the EGR valve is not working.





If your car is not running any different then it is probably one of these or something else to do with the smog control system. This SHOULD not be a huge issue but your car will get much poorer gas mileage till the problem is resolved.





Try to tighten the gas cap if it turns more than a quarter turn before it starts to ';click'; then that is more than likely your problem.





If the car started running poorly when the light first came on then you have a serious problem that should be checked right away.

Do the autozone check and have them pull your error code from the onboard diagnostics. You could also check online for your make and model of car and see what kinds of common problems occur in your model (google). But that is probably harder than just pulling the codes.
The Check Engine light indicates that the OBD-II (onboard diagnostics) system has detected a fault condition somewhere in the engine management system. You need to have this code to help diagnose the problem.





You can get this code pulled for free at just about any auto parts store. Make sure you have them give you the actual code and not just buy parts they suggest to fix it. After you have the code we can help figure out what is wrong with your car.
It could be anything. If your check engine light is on then you can take it up to some auto stores (like AutoZone or other places that sell auto parts) and they will run a free diagnostic check. If the light is on then a diagnostic machine they have can tell you what the problem is.
It could be a lot of things from loose gas cap to something more serious. Check with local auto parts store, a lot of them will use the decoder on it for free to let you know what is wrong. good luck
The ';check engine'; light can mean a number of things from any number of sensors to the gas cap the is loose, your best bet is to take your car to a reputable shop and let them check it out..
My check engine light has been on for over two years now. When I took it in to have it checked I was told everything checked out and sometimes this just happened. I ignore it and have never had any problems.
