My car Is stuck in park and When i lifted the hood i noticed i was very low on transmission oil. From what i have read this is the reason why my car cant switch into drive or reverse or anything and is just stuck in park..... Can i use any transmission oil for my car cause there are so many at the store or do i need a certain kind for my cutlass oldsmobile????Car is stuck in park, Transmission Oil Question ?
1-- you have to have the motor running and the shifter in either the park or nuetral position to get an accurate transmission fluid level.

#2-- there is one and only one type of transmission fluid that is recommended for your car. Not the brand name but the TYPE.

it is mentioned in your owners manual.

#3-- The park /lock position is actually a pawl on the shaft inside the transmission. Get a hold of a buddy and have him bounce the car while you try to get the shifter out of park. He should try the bounce-push forward and the bounce-push backward . it should work eventually.

4-- Then nextime U talk about your cars problems dont be shy. Right now we dont know WTF you are driving,,so any advice is just a general ''works on most''' type.

Also, if it is stuck in park and rocking it back and forth gets it to release use your emergency brake from now on to keep the pressure off of the transmission. When you park on any hill put it in neutral and apply the emergency brake enough to hold the car. Then put it in park. This will keep the pressure on the brake instead of the transmission.

Also make sure you check your fluid the way you should. It usually says it right on the dip stick. Usually they say to check it when it is hot and in neutral. Do NOT overfill!
Fluid level has nothing to do with it being stuck in park. Chances are you are parked on a hill and the pressure on the parking pawl is preventing it from releasing. Try having someone push it up the hill as you shift out of park. Or you could have a problem with the shift lock mechanism not releasing when you step on the brake. What year is your Olds?
Agree with Talon and Golden Boy.

You MUST engage the PARKING Brake.

Just slamming it into P is a violation of the instructions inthe operator's manual.

STOP IT NOW!

Eric
It should also list the type of transmission fluid required on the dipstick
use dextron
