Yes, your car needs oil to remain on the road. If your car has only 5% of it's available oil reserves, then you NEED to add oil IMMEDIATELY!
If you can walk to a store that has quarts of oil, go get a couple of quarts to add before you even drive to a service center.
Your engine is made of of lots of moving parts, these moving parts need lubrication between them, or it's like rubbing pennies together 3 to 5 thousand times per minute, they'll get really hot, then start to break down. Oil prevents this from happening.
Go to Jiffy Lube or some other place that changes oil and put down the $20 to get it changed, it will save you thousands in repairs, or having to buy a whole new car.
Also, you don't have to change your oil every 3,000 miles. Most cars can go 5k to 7.5k between changes, look it up in your owners manual and follow that.

What year is your car? If the car is not older than 5 years old then that is most likely the engine oil life percentage. You can drive it just fine. If you were ';low on oil'; you would see a different message. 5% is an indication that you need to change your oil. I would not go on a road trip though. If you plan to go out of town..get your oil changed first.
Be sure to reset the engine oil life meter right after your oil change. Some places reset it for you...some don't. Look in your manual for insttructions which usually involve turning the ignition to battey and pushing on the gas pedal a few times...nothing too complicated.

Ahhh, yes! Go get your oil checked. Just run into an auto store and have them check it for you, if you don't know how. Your whole engine could seize if you don't have oil in it. Just buy a couple of quarts to get you through until your oil change. They're only a few dollars each.
If you engine does not have oil, your engine pistons are not going to be lubricated, and it will cause intense heat and friction. That will cause your engine to seize and stop running completely.
I would suggest buying three quarts of oil, and dumping them in. ASAP.
Pop the hood and check the oil level. If it is low, jusy go buy a couple quarts and pour it in. If your car runs out of oil, the engine will seize up and you will have a giant paperweight.
the message that popped up says that the oil life has only 5% left. check the oil and make sure it is full. have the oil changed as soon as possible.

I think it means you have 5% of the 3000 miles left on your oil interval. If you only have 5% of the oil left (by volume), you are already doing damage.
Either way get the oil changed NOW.
