This is my first car, 2000 VW Golf 1.6 litter. I just bought it second hand and when i took the yellow stick out to see how much oil it has, its to the minimum as stated in the book. I called the person who sold me the car and he said he had an oil change at 58k miles and next service check is at 68k miles or in feb 08 next month. The car is at 64k miles. I also asked him what oil he used and he told me he uses Magnetic Castrol GTX and something about 15 -30 lw i didnt quite understand what he was telling me lol the car is on petrol btw. What should i do? should i buy a bottle of that stuff and just poor in the engine? also how should this be done? my friends told me poor only when engine is cool ..
thanks 4 any information.Car oil do i need to change it and how?
3,000 miles is the normal travel amount before you should do an oil change. It is helpful if the car has been run for a few minutes to warm up the oil, but you don't want it to run for too long or else the oil will be ridiculously hot and burn your fingers while you're pulling out the drain plug.
So, first things first...get out your owner's manual and determine the right type and quantity of oil your car will need. You should also replace the oil filter during at least every other oil change, so you may consider picking one of those up too.
Once you have the oil, you'll need to drain the old oil out. On the bottom side of the engine you will find your oil pan (have someone who knows something of cars identify any parts you are unfamiliar with!) Using a wrench, remove the oil plug and drain the oil into an appropriate container. The oil will start to come out before you have the plug fully removed, so you will definitely be getting some oil on you...wear gloves and a shirt you don't care too much about.
Once the oil flow has reduced to a mere trickle, you can reinstall the plug. Make sure it's tight, because loosing one while you're driving can completely destroy the motor.
Now would be the time to replace the filter if you purchased one. It will also be full of old oil and will require a filter wrench to remove. Before installing the new one, wet your finger with new oil and apply some to the seal on top of the filter.
Having done that, find the oil cap somewhere under your hood and remove it. A funnel will help you prevent a mess while pouring the new oil in. Pour in the correct amount as specified in your manual and reinstall the cap.
Clean up your mess and put away your tools...you're pretty much done. You might want to check the oil with the dipstick and look under the car to make sure there are no leaks.
Drive 3,000 miles and repeat. Congratulations, you're done!Car oil do i need to change it and how?
huh not sure why your waiting 10k miles to change oil useally 3k oil change but ask a dealer
take it to a shop(mechanic) that does oil changes and get it done professionally. It doesn't take long and usually not very expensive. Over here we have quick lubes that does it in 29 minutes or so usually less than1 hr
Maintaining your car according to the VW manufacturer's maintenance schedule will save you money in the long run. In addition, if you want to keep the car as long as possible, I recommend switching to a synthetic blend oil type that has both conventional and synthetic oil in it. You can also use a full synthetic oil from http://www.mobiloil.com such as Mobil One that will allow you to go 9,000 miles between oil changes.
Don't forget to have your transmission fluid flushed every 50,000 miles and your engine coolant replaced every 3 years.
Sounds to me that you have an extended warranty available from VW. Go to the dealership and ask them. Is your car a turbo engine?? If so, then Castrol, as good as it is, is not the right oil for it. You should use only Mobil One or Pentosin synthetic in it. It will prolong engine life and prevent leaks in your engine seals. Also, it keeps engine clean inside. Engine does not have to be cool to check your oil level. Also, be sure to change your brake fluid every 2-3 years as well.
That person who just answered your question is correct. However, to be sure exactly what type of oil to re-place the bad oil with, you should take it to a trustworthy mechanic if there is such a person. Ask around to find out who the reliable mechanics are in your area so they can look at your car and make sure they add in the correct type of oil. Any oil of course would work, but certain oils are better for certain cars/models than others. If you change your own oil, you'll probably still need to find someone with a lift so you can get under the car and release the old oil. It's hard to get under the car without a lift and do the job correctly. Whatever you do, DON';T add in the good oil without removing the bad.
well first off, i change my engine oil at 5000 miles castrol is a good oil. how often you change it,or how often it has been changed will determine the life of your motor. as far as how to change it, i would have to send my daughter to show you. shes changed her own since she was 16.
You should change your oil at least every 3000 to 3500 miles, so you do need an oil change, the oil filler cap will have the weight of oil you need to use, most likely 5w 30
